Happy Boxing Day - hope everyone got what they wanted from Satan, er Santa.  For the last new title of the year we have an extremely rare flick that you can barely even find on the IMDB.  It is another excellent print from Japan, so maybe a few of you out there will enjoy this rarity........

THE LION'S SHARE (1984)

     
     An Italian cop is suspended from the force when traumatic feelings begin to hamper his work.  He  returns to his home town of Sun City, South Africa once he realizes that his trauma stems from when he was child and witnessed his father being attacked and eaten by lions.

Still haunted by memories of the mysterious death, he begins an investigation to get some answers once and for all. His former partner soon shows up to help him out and together they try and figure out who exactly was responsible for letting the lions have a human dinner.


This super rare German/Italian/South African co-production combines elements of giallo, thriller and cop revenge to create a very entertaining ride that will have you guessing.  Shot on location in South Africa, its truly unique backdrop also makes the film visually stand out from your average cop thriller.

DEVIL, THE (DVD) gross out Asian horror of black magic witchery

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of maggot filled orifices danced in their heads........

Christmas is just around the corner and what better way to ring in the holiday season than with one of the most outstanding examples of the Asian gross-out gore horror.  We tracked down an amazing WIDESCREEN and UNCUT print from Japan that is the definitive version of this flick and it a must for fans of all things disgusting.....

THE DEVIL (1981)  

     A drifter moves into a family run hotel and falls for their daughter during his stay.  After some nifty matchmaking by the bellboy Ding Dong, a marriage is arranged despite the suspicions speed of the romance. 

     Happiness doesn't last long though as the new husband is really a conman out to destroy the family for his own financial benefit. The sighting of a dead girl suggests the conman has a past connected to murder.  When there is a death at the hotel, the old aunt delves into her black magic spells to seek revenge.


     Director Chang Jen-Chieh draws you in with his confidence by creating a dirty feel and laying it on thick visually and aurally. Effective practical effects are used for the deadly spells that show the victims deteriorate with disgustingly imagery involving pus filled boils, snakes, worms and maggots.

RESCUE TEAM (DVD) Filipino jungle exploitation action with Richard Harrison

This one is super rare - we've been holding onto it for quite sometime since there wasn't even a consensus on its actual existence on the Internet Movie Database until recently. Finally, we a very happy top add another addition to the jungle action flicks that came out of the Philippines in the early '80s - and of course, bonus for starring Richard Harrison.......... 

RESCUE TEAM (1983)
     
     A top CIA agent is offered a hundred thousand dollars to save a Vietnam POW. The agency's computer picks out the best men to help out on the mission and soon the merry pose of tough guys head to Thailand.


     Pretending to be  a group of archaeologists, the lethal killing squad decide to party upon arrival and soon get hammered on booze as they hit up the Thai strip clubs.  The next day they must head out on their suicide mission and only the strong will survive, but that just might be the guy with the strongest liver.


     Richard Harrison stars as the top CIA agent in this very rare Filipino jungle action flick. Bloody violence, a jungle full of bamboo death traps and some double crossing keeps things more than interesting and a definite must for fan of Filipino exploitation action.

I AM THE LAW (DVD) Giuliano Gemma battles the Mafia with Morricone score

After a lot of digging, we have unearthed a really rare early Eurocrime flick that actually takes place in the 1920's during Mussolini's facist reign in Italy. This Japanese print is the extended uncut version and being an actual true story, you might feel like you actually learned something after viewing it........

I AM THE LAW (1977)

     

     Cesare Mori is a police prefect who was sent to Sicily by Mussolini with the task of defeating the Mafia. Although not a fascist himself, he is a man of law who is determined to see justice prevail.


     After the brutal murder of a family, Mori uses his direct and extreme methods in what looks more like a war than a police operation. Constantly fighting in the front lines, we even see him challenge a bandit to a duel.


     Even though his methods give miraculous results against lower violent crime, he runs into trouble when he finds out the upper Mafia are connected with important political figures.


     Director Pasquale Squitieri (Corleone) teams up with Giuliano Gemma again to realize this very strange period of Italian history. Great acting and cinematography are only enhanced by a stellar Ennio Morricone score.

     Driven by his insatiable greediness for wealth and power, a fanatic leader of a criminal ninja clan wants to spread out their drug trafficking business all over the whole world. The first target is Thailand and through bloody terrorist attacks, the murderous ninja forces strike strategically important spots.

     The government seems powerless against the brutal activities of the ninjas and requests the help of the powerful task force of the American drug fighting organization.  The US authorities send their best man on a high-explosive mission to eliminate the unscrupulous killer ninja clan and destroy their drug ring.


     This classic Godfrey Ho (credited as York Lam) ninja epic seems to actually be one of the few movies he has made that uses mostly original footage. From the coke-bottle glasses wearing former ninja on the run to the ninja transforming into a toad, this film really is a zinger.

BOOBY TRAP (DVD) Post-apocalyptic remote-controlled revenge flick

Hope everyone had a great Halloween.  I was lucky enough to see Danzig Legacy show on Halloween night and witness a Samhain reunion and hear Danzig preform some old Misfit classics.  

We are back to digging up some real obscure flicks and this week we have a interesting '80s post-apocalyptic one that had a very interesting vision of what 1998 would be like.  Definitely worthy for anyone that is a fan of robot future trash.....

BOOBY TRAP (1986)

     It is 1998 and the city of Los Angeles has been quarantined off after a plague wiped out 120 million people in the country. Law and order no longer exists, but disease, violence and immorality are running rampant.


     A young man and his family are being terrorized by a local gang and nobody will help.  When the gang kills his grandmother and breaks his legs, the computer savvy cripple goes on the defensive and sets booby traps around the neighborhood.  It is war and the traps kill the gang members one by one in the most bizarre and vicious way imaginable.


     Not your average post-apocalyptic feature, it is more of a MacGyver-style revenge film with remote-controlled robots versus marauding gangs.  It does somehow show mankind's ability to overcome the struggling ways of fate and makes you think about what calamities might lie ahead.

PLEDGE NIGHT (DVD) frat house '80s slasher with Anthrax sountrack

Halloween is getting closer and this week we have a rare slasher that is a must if you are a fan of the genre.  It has more than a few laughs and features the lead singer of Anthrax as the star villan before he get messed up from acid.

PLEDGE NIGHT (1988)

     

1968, a young hippie frat pledge named Sid was killed in a hazing mishap, burned to death in a tub of acid. Two decades later, his demonic corpse returns to the frat house during "Hell Week" when new recruits are taking part in more hazing rituals.

     As Acid Sid goes on a rampage, the bodies pile up and the new pledges are left to determine if the grisly murders are a terrible reality, or just a mean-spirited prank intended to further debase them. One loyal frat brother sets out to stop Acid Sid, but how do you kill a graduate monster that is already dead?

     This entertaining '80s slasher starts with one sick, gross and perverted pledge-test after another before the blood and gore killing spree goes in to full swing. Features a soundtrack by Anthrax, with lead singer Joey Belladonna also showing up in the film as the young Sid.

SLEEPING CAR, THE (DVD) evil ghost haunting with gore and laughs

More horror continues as we have found this great little flick that was made at the time when it was fashionable to have a few one liners mixed in with scares.  This one stars AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON's David Naughton who gets it on with the brunette girl from Weird Science........  

THE SLEEPING CAR (1990)  

     A over-aged journalism student getting over a hellish marriage moves into a railroad car that has been converted into a small house.  He soon finds that the place is possessed by the ghost of a conductor named The Mister who blames himself for a horrible train crash in the past.


     The Mister has no tolerance of sex, drugs, or rock and roll and starts killing the car's visitors and neighbors by using telekinesis in some creative and gory ways.  After some near-fatal encounters with the violent specter, the tenant and roommate seek help from a local exorcist to rid the car of The Mister for good.


     This a well paced haunted house flick that delivers with gruesome moments, laughs, and some nudity thrown in for good measure. Stars David McNaughton (An American Werewolf in London), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers), and FX wizard John Carl Beuchler designing and playing The Mister himself.

MAYA (DVD) rare atmospheric Italian horror about violent curse

As the Halloween month rolls on, we have unearthed a great supernatural horror made at the tail end of Italy's reign of all thing stylish and gorey.  This one delivers in all aspects - sex, blood, gore , stylishly shot and this one is a truly unique tale that hasn't been played to death.......

MAYA (1989)  

     A professor is murdered while undertaking a study of an ancient Mayan pyramid.  Upon hearing the news, his daughter travels to a nearby Venezuelan town to get answers and meets up with an old friend of the professor who attempts to help her solve the mystery.

     A Mayan curse has been release with the resurgence of the evil Mayan king Ze Bul Bai.  He has conquered death and wants revenge.  Violent deaths come to anyone unfortunate enough to encounter the curse, be them "good" or "bad".


     Marcello Avallone directs this highly innovative film with stylish atmosphere and tension that summons menace in quiet images.  He uses sharp and shocking violence throughout the film, although brutal and bloody, it is done in short bursts that don't detract from the story.

RIFT, THE (DVD) Juan Piquer Simón's underwater monster mission

This week we have some underwater monster mayhem that came out when THE ABYSS and LEVIATHAN were the rage at the box office.  Directed  by the some man who gave us the slasher PIECES and another creature feature SLUGS, this one definitely delivers more than most of the other similar ones of the time........

THE RIFT (1990)

     Somewhere off the coast of Norway a  high tech nuclear submarine has disappeared in the rift, an endless black chasm at the bottom of the sea. With his friend missing, the inventor of the sub  is  forced to  head up a rescue mission to go down and retrieve the lost vessel and crew.

     Tension mounts as the the rescue team dive deeper that any sub has ever ventured.  Nothing can prepare the crew for the horror lurking in the rift and the crew must wage a battle against unimaginable evil.


     Juan Piquer Simón (Pieces, Slugs) directs this entry into the underwater-monster-mission movie genre and creates a great one with its perfect pacing, ample monsters and graphic gore-shots that splatter the screen. Also feature Full Metal Jacket's R. Lee Ermey as another hard-nosed militarist that you've come to expect him to play.

     Worldwide terrorist activity is springing up from Malaysia to Moscow. An elite team is being formed to deal with the situation by recruiting key people to undertake a grueling training camp that teaches commando tactics, bomb disposal skills and rescue scenarios. The course uses real ammunition rounds and requires overcoming lethal traps, so only the strongest survive to become the part of The Trident Force.


     A world delegation conference sees the new group immediately called into action when a terrorist faction plans on crashing the party. They dispense of the threat using their honed skills and send a clear message to the terrorists that the free world has a new policy and its enforcers are The Trident Force. The turmoil has just begun though as more bullets fly and bodies bleed leading up to an explosive conclusion.


     This rare Filipino production really might be the inspiration behind Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s puppet parody ‘Team America’. It’s 'B’ movie brilliance that you know you expect to be entertained by and it doesn’t let you down.
