VIDEO DEAD, THE (DVD) rare '80s zombie flick UNCUT from JAPAN

This one is an old favorite from back in the day - I'm sure you remember seeing this one on your local video store shelf too.  We were in luck an managed to find a great Japanese print that is even better quality than the domestic version, so take a trip down memory lane with some zombie fun...........

THE VIDEO DEAD (1988)


     A mysterious crate is delivered to a house in the woods and the homeowner finds out that inside is an old television that only plays one channel.  The TV shows the same film repeatedly where bloodthirsty zombies rise from the graves and ends up being a portal to which zombies can actually enter the world of the living.

     3 months later a brother and sister move into the house whose previous owner was killed by the zombies. They soon discover the haunted TV left by the previous owners and it begins releasing the hungry zombies all over again. It is up to the siblings to close the portal and send the undead creatures back where they belong to stop the bloodbath.


     Robert Scott writes and directs this ridiculously premised zombie flick that doesn't take itself too seriously and ends up being an amusing romp.  There is excellent pacing which never slows too much, keeping plenty of zombie action around every corner.

AVALON (DVD) super rare fanatasy adventure by Michael J. Murphy

This week we have an insane find - this one is so rare it doesn't even exist on the IMDB! Quite enjoyable for all of you that like ridiculous adventure quests with lots of crazy characters to keep the laughs rolling.......

AVALON (1988)


     The adventure begins when a muscle bound hero rescues a woman from some over-zealous Druids.  He offers to help track down her lover who has been nabbed and enslaved by the evil hard-bodied Morgana.  They set of on their quest, accompanied by a cowardly thief who has decided to tag along.


     The trio travel to an isle where the thief takes a golden apple from a mysterious tree. He soon sinks into a mire doomed by the weight of the golden apples, but is rescued by a swamp creature which leaves him with a riddle, "He who kills my reflection will set me free."


     Reaching the villainess' compound, they battle through zombies and present themselves as warriors for the competition of armed combat. The hacking and whacking ensues, but this will not be the last battle before the journey ends, as a mighty dragon still must be slain.


     Michael J. Murphy provides his director's technical skills to this sword and sorcery tale filled with female flesh, attractive witches, Merlin as a sex god, and zombie warriors.  Also making an appearance are tinsel, foil, cardboard, polystyrene, plastic bags and plastic jewelery.

We uncovered another great widescreen print from Japan of a hilarious Godfrey Ho ninja flick.  This one is super entertaining and goes best with a few beers.........

NINJA: AMERICAN WARRIOR (1987)

     In his attempt to be the most powerful man in the world, the leader of a sinister ninja army starts his domination by becoming the largest narcotics smuggler in the orient. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the Hong Kong Police have joined forces with the CIA to bring down the ninja leader by any means, at any cost.


     A CIA operative chosen is chosen for an important deadly task for the take down and ultimately realizes that the man he must kill was his closest friend in the war. Torn between justice and loyalty he must make the most critical decision of his life.


     Another Godfrey Ho cut and splice ninja extravaganza, this hilarious action flick has all the over acting and half baked dialog that you come to expect. This one also features some death scenes generally not shown in the west, including a child being strangled to death and a pregnant woman brutally stabbed to death in front of her husband - oucho!

WITCH BITCH (DVD) aka DEATH SPA - gorefest with Ken Foree

We have found a rare Japanese print of this early nineties slasher/ghost story, originally released as DEATH SPA in North America. Some really entertaining cheese with questionable fashion and music, but the gorey deaths and nudity are all there to make a fine example of the genre.............

WITCH BITCH (1990)


     The wife of a health club owner committed suicide because she became crippled giving birth to their child. Now her murderous spirit is roaming the halls of the spa, making mischief, and killing patrons in unique and clever ways.

     First she takes control of the club's computer-controlled circuitry, then the bloodthirsty ghost possess her brother to continue manifesting her devilish deeds. The police come to investigate, but it is the sleazy financial partners who want exclusive control of the club that are on the top of the suspects list.

     This campy gorefest is basically a series of outrageous death scenes one after another that provide more that a few laughs. Watch as yuppie hard bodies are hacked (by blender), torn (by weight machine), burnt (by tanning booth), boiled (by shower), shredded (by flying glass), and even mauled to death by demonically-possessed carp! If that isn't enough, even Dawn of the Dead's Ken Foree even shows up in a small role.
