DEADLY JAWS (DVD) German sunken treasure adventure with sea creature encounters

This week we have found a really rare German flick that predates JAWS, but really isn't about killer sharks as much the title and cover would have you think.  An entertaining seaward adventure in its own right, it does still in fact have many encounters with deadly creatures of the ocean, they just are more of blockers than stalkers..............

DEADLY JAWS (1974)

A trio of tourists arrange to meet one of their uncles to get information about an Aztec sunken treasure of insurmountable wealth. When they arrive at the uncle's apartment they find him bleeding to death, but he manages to divulge the location of the secret map before his demise. The killer is still in the apartment though and instead of killing the group, he somehow arranges for himself to be the captain of the boat they hire to go find the treasure.

After getting some dive training in, the group set off and find the site of the treasure which is teeming with deadly sea life, including a fearsome octopus, creepy eels, a hammerhead shark and more. It isn't only the creatures of the sea that the treasure hunters need to worry about though as a local gangster has been following them, waiting for the loot to be pulled up to claim for himself.

Made the year before Steven Spielbergs's Jaws, this rare German production is more of an action adventure than killer creature feature. Cinematography by the prolific veteran Franz X. Lederle borders on brilliant, giving the locations a tropical brilliance with superb underwater photography as well.

LEATHERNECKS (DVD) spaghetti war action with Richard Hatch WIDESCREEN

We have found another great 'namsploitation action flick for the catalogue for this week release.  An Italian production filmed in the Philippines, it stars Richard Hatch from the original Battlestar Galactica tv series and features a score by Stefano Mainetti (Zombi 3, Strike Commando 2, Cobra Mission 2).  An excellent UNCUT and WIDESCREEN print from Japan.........

LEATHERNECKS (1989)

Deep in the jungles of Vietnam, a patrol of American soldiers find a cache of US weapons being transported by the Vietcong. They head back to base to find an intelligence officer waiting for them who they now have to take back out into dangerous territory and track down the arms dealer.

Double-crossing and blazing gun battles ensue as the group of soldier end up defending a small village atop a desolate hill. The Vietcong will not give up as they charge out of the surrounding jungle and blast away with mortars and M-16s.

Actor-turned director Ignazio Dolce (The Last Platoon) again teams up with star Richard Hatch (Capt. Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica) for another high-octane, low-plot Vietnam spaghetti war flick. Filmed on location in the Philippines, it is excellently executed with dizzying photography that features lots of big explosions, cursing commandos and a never ending supply of bullets.

SCARED STIFF (DVD) '80s shock style supernatural voodoo possesion

We have a pretty great flick this week for all those who have a soft spot for classic '80s make-up and visual special effects.   David Lynch's Twin Peaks partner Mark Frost co-wrote this obscure little gem and it definitely has more than its fair share of randomness and craziness too.......

SCARED STIFF (1987)

This ghostly revenge tale starts in 1857, when a cruel Southern plantation owner is cursed by voodoo-worshiping slaves and turned into a monster who locks his wife and children in a trunk.

Back to modern times, a psychiatrist and his ex-patient rock-star girlfriend move into the haunted mansion and find an old diary, a broken amulet and some dessicated corpses, whereupon the curse is passed on. The longer the psychiatrist stays in the mansion, the more possessed he becomes. Soon his girlfriend must battle him, the ghost of the original villain, and phantoms of her own past.

This obscure film entertains by riding a tension between subtle ghost story aspects and eighties style gore effects that are yanked in to up the shock factor. Co-writer Mark Frost went on to create Twin Peaks with David Lynch.

RAGE TO KILL (DVD) uncut exploitation action with Oliver Reed

Ever since we put up the trailer for this on YouTube, a number of people have been asking about if we were ever going to be able to get a print of the whole film.  Well today is the day - we have have an amazing WIDESCREEN and UNCUT version of this insane action flick starring the drunken Oliver Reed who kills at will while talking trash........

RAGE TO KILL (1988)

An evil general (The Brood's Oliver Reed) and his army of thugs show up and take over a Caribbean island by force. They end up making their base in the local college and keep all the attending students held hostage.

When a former war hero hears about the coup, he heads to the island knowing that his brother is there and might be in trouble. Soon after his arrival, he gets caught, beaten, and electrocuted. When he manages to escape, he trains the students into a guerrilla army and leads them to payback the dictator with wholesale slaughter.

Bearing a weird resemblance to the recent film The Expendables, this film also recalls 80's concerns like the cold war and the Grenada incident. Contains required b-movie action elements: lots of violence, bullets, explosions, and an obligatory sex scene.

NIGHTWISH (DVD) hallucinogenic supernatural horror with KNB FX

Here is a bizarre one that combines the supernatural with dreams and aliens into an interesting feature that can definitely be viewed more than once.  Not unlike Videodrome or The Lost Highway, what is a dream, hallucination, or reality can be confusing upon the first watch.  This great UNCUT print from Japan is a must for fans of the unusual.........

NIGHTWISH (1990)

Using sensory deprivation techniques, a doctor of parapsychology provokes his students to examine their own death in evermore horrifying circumstances.  Roles are exchanged and shuffled as reality and fantasy become indistinguishable and each new dreadful death proves more terrifying than the last.

Their paranormal explorations lead them to an abandoned mansion in a desolate area. Local legends tell stories of extraterrestrials which the students attempt to explore. Reality, the supernatural and dreams weave into a tapestry of horror and desire from which there may be no escape.

Writer/director Bruce R. Cook uses unusual imagery and experimental lighting composition to create an hallucinogenic atmosphere to drive this fascinatingly nightmarish head trip.  Features a cool cast including First Blood's Jack Starrett in his last feature before his death and some gruesome gore effects by the KNB FX group.
